THE PATH CARS ARE TOO HOT
How many times have you heard that complaint this
week?
Once in a while you can get a hot seat on the PATH
and, whoa, that'll warm you ... or, at least one
part of you .. up fast.
But there are times when the PATH cars in winter are
too hot.
Think about it. You know I'm right.
You somehow force yourself into a very crowded PATH
car and there's no room to turn around, no room to
put your own hand in your pocket. and all you can do
is stare at the neutral space in front of you
"SORRY, DOOR OUT OF ORDER" while, heck, on this
crowded commuter car, there isn't room to change
your mind!
That's the time when the PATH car is too hot.
The time when you can't move your own arm in front
of you to loosen the zipper on your heavy coat, or
put some slack in the scarf wound tightly against
the cold platform breeze.
You'd be happy to drop your gloves for a moment, but
there's no room and they couldn't fall to the floor
if you let them go.
Meanwhile, you wish you could lift your hand to your
face to wipe the sweat off your brow. But there's no
room in steerage.
If only you could let out some of the steam building
up inside your
L.L.
BEAN 'good to 30 below' coat - you could heat
the rest of the car.
It seems the weirdest thing here in Jersey. Some of
the main PATH stops are outside. It's amazing, isn't
it, that no matter how cold you are, when you step
out on the platform at Newark or Harrison or Journal
Square - you find yourself in a cold so
indescribable your words freeze in the back of your
brain!
The other weird thing you notice when you wait at
the Exchange Place station for a PATH car from WTC
is the sudden gush of cold air being pushed ahead of
the incoming car.
The platform is no place for lightweights (people
that is), and what's with the gust of fumes that
track the incoming car. There ought to be a law
against that kind of pollution. But that would be
asking too much.
Another month or so and no one will remember how
cold it was on the PATH platform, or that the
crowded PATH cars are too hot.
They'll all be moaning about the air conditioning.
- Happy Trails,
-- Anthony
