BUS - TRAIN LIGHT RAIL AUTO  FOOTPATH

WHITE KNUCKLE RAIL TRAVELER

Last week I took a friend from Penn Station in Newark to 33rd street on the Path. We had to change cars at Journal Square on our way to the Morgan Library.

It was after 10 a.m. and we endured standing room only.

My friend was nervous when I leaned against the Path doors that say Do Not Lean On The Door. I think she thought I would fall out. I haven't seen anyone fall out yet, I assured her.

Her knuckles were white and bloodless holding on to the upright bar in a death grip.

She said couldn't believe people fell asleep riding these cars.

"How can they read with all the shaking going on?"

She admitted that the ride from Harrison to Journal Square was dizzying. I hesitated to tell her we'd soon be traveling underground at a high rate of speed.

If you didn't know any better, you'd think, from my friend's description of the ride, that the Path was much like the Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island, and not an every day commuting conveyance.
